Five days, thoughtfully focused

This itinerary takes inspiration from our five-day Sri Lanka leaflet: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala and the southern coast. It suits travellers who want a fast-moving introduction and are comfortable with several substantial road journeys.

It is not the right pace for everyone. If you prefer longer visits, relaxed mornings or travel with young children, ask us to extend the route or choose fewer stops. Your flight times determine whether this plan is feasible.

Days 1–2 · Culture and tea country

Day 1: travel towards Kandy and, if timing allows, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic or enjoy a lakeside walk. After a late arrival, a night near the airport may be a better option and the route should be adjusted.

Day 2: continue into the central hills towards Nuwara Eliya, with time for tea-country scenery and an agreed stop along the way. Keep the number of activities modest so the transfer remains comfortable.

Days 3–4 · Ella and the wild south

Day 3: travel to Ella and choose a suitable viewpoint or a visit around the Nine Arch Bridge. A rail segment is optional, subject to tickets and timing, and should replace part of the plan rather than be added on top of it.

Day 4: head towards Yala for an overnight stay and a safari only if the arrival time and park arrangements allow. If a morning safari is preferred, the following day needs enough space before onward travel.

Day 5 · A coastal finale

Continue towards Galle for the fort or a coastal stop, with departure arrangements planned around your actual flight. Bentota can be discussed as an alternative coastal stop rather than an additional must-do visit.

A same-day safari, long coastal transfer and airport departure may be too ambitious. We will recommend an extra night or remove a stop when the timing does not work.
